Monday's service day to benefit local community

By volunteering to help others, hundreds of Mississippi State University students, faculty and staff will "Donate a Wonderful Gift of Service" as Service D.A.W.G.S. on Monday, Aug. 13.

Service D.A.W.G.S. Day will begin at 8 a.m. at The Junction, where the Maroon Volunteer Center, along with eight MSU student organizations, will host a quick breakfast before dividing the expected 300 attendees into 21 groups and shuttling them to sites throughout Starkville, Oktibbeha County and the Golden Triangle.

The day of service is open to incoming freshmen, returning students and MSU faculty and staff, and participants will receive free T-shirts. Registration is open online at https://www.mvc.msstate.edu/servicedawgs.

Around noon, the volunteers will return to The Junction for lunch, and each contributing student organization will help host the first Service D.A.W.G.S. Day student service-organizational fair.

All eight participating student organizations, including Up 'til Dawn, Swirl Starkville, Student Veterans Association, Student Affairs Graduate Association, Silver Wings, Alpha Phi Omega, Active Minds MSU, and MSU's Chapter of the American Society for Microbiology, emphasize service as part of their mission.

Service locations will be Ability Works, Aiken Village Preschool, Camp Seminole, Clay County Development Center, Emerson Family Center, Gaining Ground, Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity, Starkville J.L. King Center, Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum, Oktibbeha County Humane Society, OSERVS, Palmer Home Thrift Store Columbus, Palmer Home Thrift Store Starkville, Salvation Army, Starkville Community Market, Starkville Public Library, Sudduth Elementary, MSU T.K. Martin Center, Starkville Cemetery Association, Oktibbeha County Humane Society, and Columbus East Lions Club.
