Starkville-MSU Symphony concert Saturday

The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra concert this Saturday evening will feature music from the European Romantic period.

Free to all, "Romantic Rendezvous" includes some major pieces written and performed between approximately 1800 and the beginning of the 20th century.

The 7:30 p.m. program in Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium opens with an overture of Beethoven's "Lenore Overture, No. 3," the most popular of three the German composer wrote for his only opera, "Fidelio."

MSU music department strings instructor Simona Barbu will be featured as the cello soloist on Russian Peter Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme," which gained widespread modern fame through performances and recordings of Leonard Rose and Yo Yo Ma.

Also on the bill will be the work of another German, Robert A. Schumann's Symphony No.3 in Eb, Op.97 ("Rhenish")
