Counseling Services gets another stamp of approval
The student counseling services program at Mississippi State continues its accreditation with a professional organization.
The university recently was notified of re-accreditation by the Alexandria, Va.-based International Association of Counseling Services Inc.
Following a scheduled evaluation, IACS found MSU continues to offer "competent and reliable professional services to its clientele." Approval also required "evidence of continuing professional development, as well as demonstration of excellence of counseling performance."
A part of MSU's Division of Student Affairs and led by Leigh Jensen-Crawford, Student Counseling Services offers individual, couple and group programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Offices are located at Hathorn Residence Hall.
Also on staff are a psychiatrist, eight full-time counselors, social workers and psychologists, as well as two doctoral graduate assistants, three part-time clinicians, and two support staff members.
Jensen praised her colleagues, saying all are "highly trained and experienced professionals working with the diverse MSU student population."
IACS was established in 1972 to encourage and assist university and four-year college counseling agencies in meeting high professional standards through peer evaluation. It also works to inform the general public about counseling services that are competent and reliable.
Bill Broyles, assistant vice president for student affairs, said campus-based counseling centers are critical for the success of university students.
"We are extremely proud of our center, leadership and staff," Broyles said. "This notice of reaccreditation confirms their outstanding work."
