National traveling film festival comes to campus this week
Movies by, for and about women will be screened Thursday, April 11 during Mississippi State's first LUNAFEST.
Open to all, the 6 p.m. event in McCool Hall's Taylor Auditorium showcases nine short films.
Tickets are $3 each, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Fund and Safe Haven Inc.
Purchases may be made at the Longest Student Health Center's Health Education and Wellness Office; on the Drill Field, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday [the 4th], Tuesday and Wednesday [the 9th and 10th]; or at the door the day of the event.
Established in 2000 by LUNA, maker of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST is designed to connect women, their stories and their causes through film. To date, 101 filmmakers have been featured, nearly $1.5 million dollars has been raised and thousands of attendees have come away moved, entertained and inspired.
This year's featured filmmakers include:
-- Martina Amati, whose movies have won the BAFTA/LA Certificate of Excellence, BAFTA for Best Short Film and numerous other recognitions;
-- Sharon Arteaga, whose "When I Grow Up" received the 2010 Texas Archive of the Moving Image Award;
-- Sarah Berkovich, a Stanford University student currently working on a fine arts master's degree in documentary film and video;
-- Sasha Collington, a 2009 London Film School filmmaking graduate;
-- Andrea Dorfman, who currently is developing her third feature film;
-- Rebecca Dreyfus, an award-winning independent producer whose documentary "Stolen" premiered on the PBS series Independent Lens;
-- Jisoo Kim, an artist at Disney Interactive;
-- Louise Leitch, who, at age 23, was running an in-house Australian government production unit and directing award-winning drama and factual programs; and
-- Amanda Zackem, a director, photographer, cinematographer and editor.
The event is sponsored by the Health Education and Wellness Office and Student Counseling Services.
