African-American Studies director candidates to deliver campus presentations
The second and third candidates for the director of African-American Studies position at Mississippi State will interview on campus this month. All university members are welcome to each candidate's open presentations, which will focus on their vision for the program.
Darryl Scriven will make his presentation on Jan. 23 from 1:45-3 p.m. in Colvard Student Union's Fowlkes Auditorium.
Scriven is chair of the Visual Arts, Humanities and Theatre Department at Florida A&M University He previously served as professor of philosophy and associate director of education at the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care. He currently is working with Tuskegee University, Morehouse School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College to write a five-year action plan to create a Culture of Health in the Deep South. His publications include a biography of David Walker, an early American philosopher and theologian (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007).
Tommy Curry will make his presentation on Jan. 26 from 1:30-2:45 p.m. in Fowlkes Auditorium.
Curry is professor of philosophy and affiliate in the program of Africana Studies at Texas A&M University. He is also executive director of Philosophy Born of Struggle, the largest and oldest black philosophical organization in America. His research has embraced the bioethics of various medical and health technologies. He has published several substantial works on 19th century ethnology and its relationship to race and gender thinking among Americanists. His "Another White Man's Burden: Josiah Royce's Quest for a Philosophy of White Racial Empire" is forthcoming from SUNY Press.
