Terry Doyle to deliver 'The New Science of Learning' presentation

The Maroon & Write Quality Enhancement Plan, in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Mississippi State, is again sponsoring the Maroon & Write Lecture Series. This year's speaker will be Terry Doyle, who will present "The New Science of Learning" on Feb. 3 in the Grisham Room at Mitchell Memorial Library. Lunch will begin service at 11:30 a.m. and the lecture will begin at noon.

Almost daily neuroscience, biology, and cognitive science researchers reveal new insights about how the human brain works and learns. The value of this research is its potential to elevate the learning success of all students regardless of their learning situations. This research about human learning requires changes in the way teaching is approached and in what students are told about how to be successful learners. This presentation will discuss many of the new research findings and suggest ways to apply them in a higher education setting.

Doyle is an author, national recognized educational consultant, and professor emeritus from Ferris State University. From 1998 to 2009 he served as the senior instructor for faculty development and coordinator of the New to Ferris Faculty Transition Program for the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. He is the author of the book "Learner Centered Teaching: Putting the Research into Practice."

Registration is available at www.ctl.msstate.edu/events. For questions about the lecture, please contact either Deborah Lee at dlee@qep.msstate.edu or Ann Spurlock at aspurlock@qep.msstate.edu. If you need assistance related to a disability, please contact Jim Dunne at 662-325-2083.
