Taj Mahal Trio carries gritty blues to MSU Riley Center in May

Bringing a distinctive style of gritty country blues to the state where the blues began, The Taj Mahal Trio will perform at the landmark MSU Riley Center Theater in downtown Meridian on May 5 at 7:30 p.m. Concertgoers who arrive early can enjoy a pre-show party and refreshments in the Grand Lobby starting at 6 p.m.

Taj Mahal, who will turn 73 on May 17, has been playing the blues his way for more than half a century. His world travels have spiced up his music with African, Latin, Caribbean, reggae, Cajun, Hawaiian, and even South Pacific flavors.

After all the years and all the miles, he still brings energy and an irresistible sense of fun to the stage. Picking his guitar or banjo or playing keyboards, he sways and nods to the beat, his growly voice shouting and soaring.

“What inspires me most about my career, is that I’ve been able to make a living playing the music that I always loved and wanted to play since the early ’50s,” he said.

Tickets are $39 and $33 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
