Gaelic vocalist Julie Fowlis brings international fame to MSU Riley Center

Julie Fowlis

Julie Fowlis is a groundbreaking artist who continues to entice new audiences worldwide and push accepted musical boundaries with her adaptations of songs from her native Scottish Gaelic tradition. On Friday [Oct. 10] at 7:30 p.m., she will grace the stage of the historic MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian for a performance that will transport the audience to another place and time.

It is little wonder that when Disney Pixar was searching for the perfect, authentic singing voice to feature in the soundtrack to "Brave," their animated blockbuster set in 10th century Scotland, their research led them Fowlis, one of the country’s true contemporary treasures.

Brought up on North Uist in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, Fowlis has been a proud standard bearer for Gaelic music and culture over the course of a solo career which has spanned three award-winning studio albums and numerous highly acclaimed projects and collaborations. This year sees the release of the much anticipated fourth studio album, Gach Sgeul/Every Story -- a mature offering of carefully selected Gaelic songs, with sensitive and lush arrangements from a host of brilliant musicians from Scotland, Ireland and further afield.

In addition to recording and producing for the award-winning Brave, Fowlis continues to collaborate on various musical projects and has been awarded a number of accolades, including an Honorary Doctor of Music degree and the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Music. Her brush with Hollywood has influenced her reach and audience, but she remains grounded and connected to the ancient traditions of her homeland.

Tickets are $27 and $21 at the MSU Riley Center box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
