Starkville-MSU Symphony concert season opens Tuesday

The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association's 2014-15 season begins Tuesday [Oct. 7] with a free 6 p.m. Big Band concert at the downtown Renasant Bank Plaza.

Celebrating its 46th performance season, the organization will hold six other concerts in the Bettersworth Auditorium of MSU's historic Lee Hall, unless otherwise noted. Also free and open to all, those programs include:

--Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m., "String Symposium," Rent Auditorium, Mississippi University for Women in Columbus;

--Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m., "Children's Concerts";

--Nov. 9, 2 p.m., "An Afternoon with Cole Porter, featuring the Symphony Chorus," First United Methodist Church in Starkville;

--Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m., "Criss Christmas Concert, featuring the MSU State Singers";

--Feb. 28, 2015, 7:30 p.m., "Much Mozart, featuring the MSU Combined Choirs, MUW Choir, Symphony Chorus and Symphony Orchestra"; and

--March 21, 2015, 7:30 p.m., "Italian Ideals."

Founded March 2, 1969 in the home of Starkville residents David and Barbara Cornell, the symphony association is a non-profit volunteer organization whose members work to educate, enlighten and share classical music with the city, university campus and other communities in the Golden Triangle region. Producing high-quality musical events and increasing awareness for the arts are its primary missions.

In addition to Mississippi State, major SSA contributors include the J.W. Criss Foundation, Mississippi Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Renasant Bank, City of Starkville, Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau and Gildea Foundation.
