Olivier named associate dean for administration at College of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Alicia Olivier, a professor of anatomic pathology at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named the college’s associate dean for administration. She served as interim associate dean for administration since October 2023 and as a faculty member in the Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine since 2014. Olivier will provide support for all aspects of college administration, with a focus on faculty and staff recruitment and retention, college policies and operations and the implementation of strategic initiatives. “Dr. Olivier brings her extensive experience as an educator, anatomic pathologist and researcher to this position, and she is committed to supporting the three important components of the MSU CVM mission: teaching, service and research,” Dr. Nicholas Frank, MSU CVM dean, said.

Marufuzzaman named interim head of Industrial and Systems Engineering
Associate Professor Mohammad Marufuzzaman has been named interim head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in Mississippi State University's Bagley College of Engineering. “I am pleased Dr. Marufuzzaman has agreed to serve as interim department head. His leadership in other areas in the department makes him an ideal candidate, and I look forward to working with him in maintaining the momentum of the Industrial and Systems Engineering program,” Robert Green, interim dean of the college, said. Marufuzzaman is an expert in supply chain optimization, stochastic programming, and decomposition methods with specific applications in bioenergy security, and risk management.

Reed Food Technology establishes endowed MSU professorship, supports new Food Science Innovation Hub
Mississippi State University is fueling the future of food science with the establishment of the Reed Family Endowed Professorship and the university’s newly created Food Science Innovation Hub within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. Reed Food Technology, a Mississippi-based company with offices in Pearl and Hernando, initiated the gift to enhance MSU’s reputation as a leading institution in food science education and research. Scott Willard, CALS dean and MAFES director, said it further solidifies MSU’s position as a leader in food science, safety and security. Giles Distinguished Professor Wes Schilling is the newly appointed director of the Food Science Innovation Hub.

Lobato de Magalhães receives international wetlands research awards, helps MSU advance ecological modeling
A distinguished Mississippi State postdoctoral research associate renowned for her groundbreaking work in wetlands ecology is being recognized by the Society of Wetland Scientists with two major honors. Tatiana Lobato de Magalhães will receive the 2024 SWS International Fellow Award and the 2024 SWS Presidential Service Award at the organization’s annual meeting in Taiwan this November. Lobato de Magalhães joined the lab of MSU Professor Gary Ervin this summer in the Department of Biological Sciences. There, she collaborates with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop advanced ecological modeling for wetlands.

Free learning opportunities via LinkedIn Learning available to faculty, staff and students
Sharpen skills. Explore new interests. Increase professional value. These and other results are now available via no-cost learning opportunities to Mississippi State faculty, staff and students through MSU’s new agreement with LinkedIn Learning. A popular, online education platform, LinkedIn Learning’s 20,000-plus courses are available to campus via a quick login using their MSU NetID email addresses. With self-paced learning, courses are presented in various formats, including bite-sized video, audio only and in-depth content. The platform is directly integrated with Canvas, the university’s learning management system. MSU faculty can use it to supplement course material or even develop and load their own content onto the platform.

Smoke-free policy enhances healthy environment
Mississippi State University is a smoke-free campus. Official policy prohibits the use of any combustible or vapor products anywhere on campus property including university buildings, university grounds, university vehicles, parking areas and sidewalks. The smoke-free campus policy is part of the university's commitment to creating a healthy environment for all members of the campus community. 'Our people' remain Keenum’s ‘No. 1 priority’
Mississippi State President Mark E. Keenum praised lawmakers for funding employee merit raises this year and recommitted to seeking additional funds for pay increases in the upcoming legislative session. Keenum’s pledge to faculty and staff came as he laid out the university’s top legislative priorities, noted the year’s highlights and looked toward future projects during the Fall General Faculty Meeting last week. “I’m grateful we’ve been able to give raises in recent years, but we also know it’s not nearly enough to get us to where we need to be,” the university’s 19th president said. “As I have said many times, my top legislative priority has never changed and will continue to be our people. With the start of the fall semester, Keenum noted “the excitement and energy” on campus.
Keenum addresses MSU-Meridian milestones, plans for growth at faculty, staff Team Tailgate event
Mississippi State University President Mark E. Keenum last Friday [Sept. 6] reiterated the university’s commitment to growing its Meridian campus during an address to MSU-Meridian faculty and staff. Keenum welcomed new faculty and staff and detailed the university’s journey in creating the Riley Campus, a story originating in strong community partnerships. “We’ve been so very blessed to have a community partner who believes in us and who wants to invest in us,” Keenum said of The Riley Foundation. “There are tens of millions of dollars they’re investing in this university. They’re investing in you, because you are the university. It’s a wonderful tribute to you and the wonderful work you do here.” Keenum attended the MSU-Meridian event, replete with a visit from university mascots Bully and Dak, after talking with West Lauderdale High School students earlier in the day.
MSU ranked among top national universities respecting free speech
Mississippi State University is in the Top 10 schools nationally for free speech on campus. MSU again is being highly rated by the national nonprofit Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, or FIRE. Ranked at No. 10 nationally, and the only Southeastern Conference university in the Top 10, MSU has long been recognized for upholding policies that maintain First Amendment and free speech protections. “A university’s strength is rooted in maintaining a marketplace of ideas,” said Dean of Students and Associate Vice Provost for Student Success Thomas Bourgeois. MSU has earned FIRE’s “green light” rating for more than a decade.
Hoffman takes on expanded mentorship role leading Office of Prestigious External Scholarships
Evidence shows that direct mentorship and support help students flourish and achieve their full potential, and Mississippi State is expanding a key mentor’s role to fully invest in this aspect of his work. David Hoffman, an advisor to MSU students since 2016 in a part-time capacity, is the new full-time interim director for MSU’s Office of Prestigious External Scholarships. “Dr. Hoffman has successfully guided many students over the last several years who have attained excellent undergraduate awards, summer scholarships, international travel grants and prestigious graduate fellowships. These students attest that Dr. Hoffman’s help has been an instrumental factor in achieving their goals,” said MSU Provost and Executive Vice President David Shaw.
