Whitten joins Extension Service nutrition program
Kelli Whitten recently joined the Mississippi State University Extension Service Office of Nutrition Education as a regional registered dietitian for the Delta. She will help in the fight against obesity and chronic disease in Mississippi. Whitten will oversee the Extension Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education, or SNAP-Ed, curriculum and delivery in the Mississippi Delta. She will work with SNAP-Ed nutrition educators in Extension county offices to help coordinate efforts to teach limited-resource families ways to improve their diets, increase physical activity and manage their food resources.
Grant to support coding education program
An $80,000 grant will help Mississippi State University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering support the teaching of computer coding skills to recent high school graduates in the Golden Triangle area. The grant will help fund the Columbus-based campus of the Mississippi Coding Academies, a tuition-free, 11-month program that helps selected participants develop into coders and web developers. “There are more than 1,000 unfilled coding jobs in Mississippi and the number of computer and technology jobs is expected to grow by 13 percent across the state over the next eight to 10 years,” said Sarah Lee, an associate clinical professor of computer science in Mississippi State’s Bagley College of Engineering.
Mississippi State recognized as ‘Military Spouse Friendly’ school
Mississippi State is being listed by Victory Media as a “Military Spouse Friendly” school for 2018. The honor is included in an annual companion list to the company’s “Military Friendly” schools, which also recognized MSU for its veteran-oriented campus culture. Brian Locke, director of the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Center for America’s Veterans and retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, said the recognition is another accolade that showcases MSU’s veteran-friendly culture.
Applications sought for SEC Visiting Faculty Travel Grant Program
The Southeastern Conference Visiting Faculty Travel Grant Program is intended to enhance faculty collaboration that stimulates scholarly initiatives between SEC universities. Mississippi State University can select a maximum of eight faculty members to receive 2018-2019 travel grants of $1,250 each. Completed applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on June 29.
Institute for the Humanities issues call for papers
Mississippi State’s Institute for the Humanities invites faculty members to submit individual paper proposals for the 2018-2019 Interdisciplinary Forum Workshop Series to be held in the upcoming academic year. The Interdisciplinary Forum Workshop Series will consist of six gatherings anchored around the theme of “Examining Governance from an Interdisciplinary Perspective.”
Summer Student Science Symposium taking abstracts from grads, undergrads
The Mississippi Academy of Sciences second-annual Summer Student Science Symposium will take place July 26 at Bost Conference Center at Mississippi State University. Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit an abstract and register to attend this special event. The symposium is designed to bring student researchers across all branches of science divisions to present their research findings and network with their peers and others in the state's scientific community. The deadline to submit an abstract is July 2.

Faculty, staff volunteers needed for Heifer Ranch trip
Mississippi State faculty and staff volunteers/chaperones are needed for the annual trip to Heifer Ranch, Arkansas, for the Global Village educational experience Oct. 12-14, 2018. Heifer International is an Arkansas-based non-profit organization focused on community development to resolve poverty and hunger around the world. The Global Village is a hands-on educational experience where students are challenged to live in modeled developing world conditions.
