ISER engineer Wall receives multi-state award
A Mississippi State research engineer based in Vicksburg who also is a graduate student is receiving a regional honor recognizing her academic and community service achievements. Emily Salmon-Wall works at the Institute for Systems Engineering Research, a collaborative effort between the university and U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center. Her research focuses on enhancing the viability of specific products made by Mississippi companies.
University leaders receive Seven Seals Award
Leaders of Mississippi’s public universities received The Seven Seals Award at the Board of Trustees meeting last week in Jackson. The Award was presented by the Mississippi Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve in recognition of significant individual or organizational achievement, initiative, or support that promotes and supports the ESGR mission. Major General Janson D. Boyles, adjutant general of Mississippi, presented the awards.
Public outreach, design honors for Carl Small Town Center's ‘Marking the Mule’ project
Mississippi State’s Carl Small Town Center is receiving two statewide awards for its “Marking the Mule” project focused on advancing citizen engagement in the Marks community. On the university’s behalf, CSTC Director Leah F. Kemp recently accepted a 2017 Public Outreach Award from the Mississippi Chapter of the American Planning Association at its joint conference with the national APA organization in Birmingham, Alabama.
Junction to open at 1 p.m. Wednesday, other Egg Bowl reminders for fans, visitors
Mississippi State University is reminding fans and campus visitors that the Junction will open at 1 p.m. Wednesday, the day prior to the Bulldogs’ 90th Battle for the Golden Egg with the University of Mississippi. In addition to obeying all parking and traffic rules, those on campus must be mindful of gameday pet policies to ensure safety. With the exception of service animals, pets are prohibited on the MSU campus beginning at noon the day before a game. To maintain MSU’s standard for exceptional grounds maintenance, fans and visitors should adhere to recycling and waste disposal guidelines.
University announces changes to fall, spring commencement ceremonies
Mississippi State University is expanding to two fall and three spring commencement ceremonies. “As our commencement ceremonies have reached capacity and knowing participation in the ceremonies will continue to increase, the Commencement Committee, after exploring several options, recommended to the provost and president that the university expand its ceremonies,” said John Dickerson, MSU assistant vice president for enrollment.
Christmas tree demand high this season
After two years of drought, Mississippi Christmas tree growers welcomed the extra rain in 2017. “In a few low-lying areas, excessive rain in May and June waterlogged the soil and killed some trees, but this was not widespread,” said Stephen Dicke, a forestry specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service. “We will always take more rain over less rain.” These few tree losses will not impact 2017 production, which Dicke expects to be similar to last year’s. Growers likely will sell more than 30,000 trees, but they still will not meet existing consumer demand.
Follow healthy eating habits during holidays
Strategic planning and reliance on whole foods in holiday meals can help keep healthy eating habits from falling by the wayside. David Buys, health specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said consumers can combat nutritional nightmares by making measured, realistic changes. “People don’t plan to fail. They fail to plan,” Buy said. “When we don’t plan for meals, it leads us to convenience and comfort foods.”
