Mississippi State’s W.L. Giles Distinguished Professors recently met for a campus luncheon to mark the start of a new academic year. Named after MSU’s 13th president, the honor is one of the most prestigious ranks bestowed on faculty members. Mississippi State students and alumni can share resumes and shake hands with employer representatives from around the country Tuesday and Wednesday. Leslie Neal, manager of marketing and events for the university’s Career Center, said approximately 180 recruiters take part in fall Career Days. The noon-4 p.m. activities take place at Humphrey Coliseum on the Starkville campus. As always, the professional gathering is free and open to all academic majors, and preregistration is not required.
A Starkville couple, both Mississippi State retirees, are making a lasting impact on the lives of MSU students. Douglas Crawford and Leigh Jensen-Crawford have established two MSU academic scholarships, each in honor of friends and mentors who impacted them during their university careers. The Crawfords recently established the Dr. Leanne H. Fazio Memorial Endowed Scholarship in the Department of Music in honor of their friend. The Crawfords earlier established the Dr. Donald W. Emerich Endowed Scholarship.
The Maroon Volunteer Center at Mississippi State details a number of volunteer opportunities for the campus community on its website and in its newsletter this week, including hurricane relief efforts, First Responders Appreciation Day, Montgomery Leadership Program, Habitat for Humanity home build, Art in the Park, area food pantries, the MSU Community Garden, and more.

University, state and federal leaders highlighted the many ways Mississippi State’s National Strategic Planning and Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) is utilizing data to inform decisions last Friday at the second annual Data Summit. Held at The Mill at MSU, the summit featured keynote speeches from U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn and NSPARC Executive Director Domenico “Mimmo” Parisi.
A longtime art professor is moving into a new role as interim associate dean for Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture, Art and Design. Jeffrey Haupt, who previously served as the painting concentration coordinator in the Department of Art, will take on the role of the associate dean. This addition to the college administration is allowing Associate Dean Greg Hall to concentrate his work as interim director of the college’s Building Construction Science program.
A member of the Mississippi State College of Business faculty is sharing an inaugural honor from the American Accounting Association. Associate Professor Bradley S. “Brad” Trinkle recently became one of four contributors receiving the first Best Paper Award of the Journal of Information Systems, academic publication of the association’s Accounting Information Systems section. Since 2011, he has been a faculty member in the Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy.
