MSU hosting Transportation & Economic Symposium
Mississippi State's chief research officer will welcome federal, state and local officials, economic developers, and industry representatives and executives to campus on Tuesday for the 2012 Transportation & Economic Symposium: Transportation for Mississippi's Sustainable Economic Growth. David Shaw, vice president for research and economic development at the land-grant institution, will be joined by Mississippi Development Authority executive director Jim Barksdale and Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman for the opening session in Bost Extension Center at 12:30 p.m.
Women in Higher Education state conference here
Women in higher education throughout Mississippi will convene Thursday and Friday at Mississippi State University for an annual conference to promote and support women's leadership in the field. The Women in Higher Education Mississippi Network's mission is to identify, develop, advance and support women in higher education in Mississippi. Amy Tuck, MSU executive director of campus operations and institutional representative for WHEMN, is also this year's WHEMN statewide coordinator.

PERS workshop on campus next week
Human Resources Management at Mississippi State is sponsoring a Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) workshop on Feb. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bost Extension Center on the Starkville campus. The workshop is free for university employees, but pre-registration is required.
Retirewise workshop series starts Tuesday
Mississippi State University Human Resources Management and MetLife are offering Retirewise on campus in this month. The free four-part program is designed to help people feel more confident about retirement, and the first session will be held this Tuesday.
Sewanee art historian lectures Thursday
University of the South art history professor Greg Clark kicks off the spring semester of Mississippi State's Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series. His free presentation, "Betty Boop: A Roaring 20s Flapper in Depression-Era American Animation," takes place Thursday.
CHASES hosts environmental historian Friday
With his Friday afternoon presentation, Southern environmental history pioneer Mart A. Stewart continues the new CHASES Lecture Series at Mississippi State. The free event is sponsored by the university's Center for the History of Agriculture, Science and the Environment of the South.
Hrabowski keynoting diversity conference in March
"Enhancing Diversity in Higher Education: Undergraduate Retention and Recruitment of Graduate Students, Faculty and Staff" will be the theme March 1 and 2 for Mississippi State's second Diversity Conference. The keynote address will be delivered by Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Spirit of State nominations, applications wanted
With the seventh annual Spirit of State Awards, Mississippi State will recognize outstanding contributions made by our students toward improving student life. Applications and nominations are now being accepted.
Recycling change: No more glass in bins, please
Mississippi State's single-stream recycling program has now been in place for more than a year. The program has fundamentally changed the way the university collects recyclables and trash on campus. However, due to a contractor change, MSU can no longer collect glass as part of the recycling stream.
