Outstanding women to be honored Tuesday

A women's advocacy organization at Mississippi State is announcing selections for its annual awards program.

The university President's Commission on the Status of Women formally will recognize the six 2012 winners during a Tuesday, April 3 reception at Memorial Hall's Coskrey Auditorium. The 3-5 p.m. event is open to all.

Established in the late 1970s by MSU President James D. McComas (1976-85), the PCSW advises the institution's chief executive on issues affecting the status and role of campus women. Since the beginning, its awards have recognized advocates for the well-being, development and advancement of women on MSU campuses and surrounding communities.

This year's honorees include:

Leslie M. Burger, Outstanding Professional (Non-Faculty) Woman. She is a wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture associate with the MSU Extension Service.

Kendra L. Carr of Meridian, Outstanding Graduate Woman. A 2010 MSU computer science graduate, she now is pursuing a master's degree in the major.

Teresa D. Gammill, Outstanding Executive/Administrative/Managerial Woman. She is assistant vice president for research.

Palara C. Grant of Clinton, Outstanding Undergraduate Woman. She is a senior mechanical engineering major.

Amanda H. Thornton of Starkville, Outstanding Community Woman. Christian Women's Job Corps director since 2009, she also is a lecturer in the MSU psychology department.

Keisha A. Walters, Outstanding Faculty Woman. She is an associate professor of chemical engineering.

Also during the ceremony, seniors Sarah K. McCain of Aberdeen and Alexandra E. "Alex" Ruhl of Gulfport will be honored with PCSW Student Leadership Awards. McCain is an English major and President's List Scholar; Ruhl, a microbiology major and Dean's List Scholar.
