LEDGER: Pensions could hold up state budget

Gov. Haley Barbour has called on legislators to nix a requested state funding increase to Mississippi's pension system pending a public review "of the financial condition of the system, both now and in out years."

The less than one percent increase suggested late last year by actuaries and approved by the Public Employees' Retirement System board to keep the fund solvent would cost the state general fund roughly $34 million, legislators estimate.
