Starkville/MSU Symphony begins 2012 season

The Starkville/Mississippi State University Symphony Orchestra kicks off 2012 with a Jan. 21 concert dedicated to parents of the performing musicians.

The free 7:30 p.m. program in historic Lee Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium will celebrate the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

MSU clarinet instructor Sheri Falcone will be featured on the famous Mozart Clarinet Concerto.

In addition to also teaching saxophone and woodwind and instrumental technique classes, she directs the music department's clarinet and saxophone ensembles. Beyond campus duties and maintaining a private studio, she performs regularly with the symphony orchestra and as a soloist in other venues.

Nadezda Potemkina, the orchestra's principal violist, will serve as guest conductor for the Saturday event. A St. Petersburg, Russia, native who began music studies at the age of five, she has performed with numerous U.S. orchestras and ensembles. She also has been a prize winner in student conducting competitions.

Potemkina recently completed two years as a music director and conductor of the Mid-South Young People's Chamber Ensemble and Wind Ensemble in Memphis, Tenn. She is pursuing a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting at the University of Memphis.
