Brett receives national leadership award

Bracky Brett

Bracky Brett, Mississippi State Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director, was named the 2020 recipient of the Frank Kara Leadership Award last Thursday [April 30].

The prestigious honor is presented annually by the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) to an athletics administrator who demonstrates leadership and vision both among his or her peers and beyond to other leaders on their campus, conference office, and/or at the NCAA. The award is named in honor of Frank Kara, a former college athletics leader and administrator at the University of Minnesota who hosted the inaugural NAAC Workshop in 2006. Kara died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 40.

"Congratulations to Bracky on this well-deserved, prestigious honor," MSU Director of Athletics John Cohen said. "This stands as a testament to his longtime leadership, integrity, knowledge and emphasis on education. We are fortunate to have him on our team at Mississippi State, and it's rewarding to see him recognized on a national level."

Brett joined MSU's in January of 2002. His duties include interpreting and monitoring national and conference regulations and coordinating rules education among MSU student-athletes, coaches, administrators and alumni. He also serves as the department's contact for the NCAA and SEC. In addition, Brett is a member of the university calendar committee and crisis action team.

"I am honored to receive this award named for one of the pioneers in our profession, Frank Kara," Brett said. "I'm grateful to Larry Templeton and Dr. David Boles for the opportunity they gave me years ago. This also would not be possible without the support of MSU President Dr. Mark E. Keenum and Director of Athletics John Cohen. There are many great people on our campus, especially our entire compliance staff, who deserve the credit more than me for what we do every day."

Born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Brett earned bachelor's (1978) and master's (1980) degrees from MSU. He came to MSU following a 24-year career as a high school teacher, coach, and administrator. He and his wife Wanda have two children and four grandchildren.
