DAFVM Spotlight Employee: Michael Brown
Michael Brown
Michael Brown has worked for Mississippi’s veterinary program for nearly 13 years. He works in the technical aspects of animal husbandry for the Equine Hospital at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
He ensures the doctors and students have the necessary supplies to provide exceptional care to all client- and university-owned animals.
Michael began his career as a student worker in 2007 and enjoyed the work. When the opportunity for full-time employment became available to him, he jumped at the chance.
“My favorite part of the job is seeing the doctors work miracles,” Michael said. “Several times, a horse would be knocking on death’s door, and the doctors would bring it back to a full recovery.”
Michael’s advice to current MSU veterinary students is to not give up. The reward and work are worth the often emotionally and physically draining days.
“Knowing I am a small part of such a vitally important institution gives me motivation to ‘Earn Respect by Exceeding Expectations,’” Michael said, quoting the CVM motto.
Optimism and perseverance are two vital traits needed to be successful in this career. When things do not go as planned, or tragedy happens, it is easy to get disheartened and want to give up, Michael explained.
“Knowing that tomorrow is another day and there are miracles waiting to happen are two things I always keep in mind,” he said.
Michael is married to Kimberly Brown, a lecturer for the MSU Psychology Department. They celebrated their 10-year anniversary in December. They have three children and are dedicated members of Redeemer Church in Starkville. Michael loves studying the Bible and theology.
