Mississippi State Assistant Professor of History Andrew F. Lang is presenting a Thursday [Feb. 28] campus lecture on military occupation during the American Civil War.

Free to all, Lang’s 3 p.m. talk in Mitchell Memorial Library’s John Grisham Room also will include a signing session for his first book, “In the Wake of War: Military Occupation, Emancipation and Civil War America" (LSU Press, 2017). The 2018 Tom Watson Brown Book Award-winning work earned Lang a $50,000 prize for his original contributions to the understanding of the Civil War time period.

A 2013 Rice doctoral graduate in history, Lang has focused his MSU research on how 19th-century Americans understood and created warfare, particularly during the Civil War era. He also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of North Texas.

Making MSU a leading destination for research on the Civil War, Reconstruction and the nation’s 16th and 18th presidents, the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Library and the Frank J. and Virginia Williams Collection of Lincolniana on Mitchell Memorial Library’s fourth floor also are open to lecture guests and the general public.

The Williams Collection of Lincolniana was donated to MSU in 2017 by former Rhode Island Supreme Court Chief Justice Frank J. Williams and his wife, Virginia, and boasts rare historical memorabilia, artifacts, documents, books and artwork relating to President Lincoln and the Civil War era. MSU is one of six universities in the nation housing a presidential library. The Grant Library is managed by the Ulysses S. Grant Association and MSU under the direction of John F.
