Week of events will honor America’s veterans

As part of national Veterans and Military Families Month, Mississippi State University will host several November events to honor America’s veterans.

Among other events, MSU will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. on Monday [Nov. 12] in Colvard Student Union's Fowlkes Auditorium.

“Mississippi State prides itself in the care and consideration given to our men and women who have bravely worn the uniform to defend our freedom,” said Brian Locke, director of MSU’s G.V. “Sonny" Montgomery Center for America’s Veterans. “In recognition of that sacrifice, I encourage everyone to attend the various events scheduled throughout the week of November 12th through the 17th.”

In addition to the Veterans Day ceremony, scheduled events include:

— Tuesday [Nov. 13], 9:30 a.m., Nusz Hall: A Green Zone Initiative training session. This session brings awareness to and encourages advocacy for student veterans, service members and dependents. Registration is limited to 30 participants. For more information and to register, visit https://www.msstate.edu/events/2018/10/green-zone-initiative-training.

— Wednesday [Nov. 14], 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Old Main Lounge in the Colvard Student Union: A reception hosted by The Writing Center and Center for America’s Veterans for the “For Those Who Serve” writing and art awards for student service members. — Thursday [Nov. 15], 6 p.m., Nusz Hall: The Fourth Annual Veteran’s 5K Run will take place, with advance registration available at https://racesonline.com/events/mississippi-state-veterans-day-5k.

— Saturday [Nov. 17], 11 a.m., Davis Wade Stadium: The annual Veterans Recognition Game will take place when MSU hosts the University of Arkansas. The Bulldogs will be wearing special uniforms that honor the legacy of university alumnus G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery, a World War II veteran and author of the Montgomery G.I. Bill. The late congressman is known for his support of service members while he served in the U.S. House of Representatives. Including dependents, the veteran community at MSU comprises 2,810 students. Recently, MSU has worked with the Mississippi National Guard to create a free tuition program for Guard members enrolled full time at MSU, and the university has waived application fees for undergraduate and graduate student veterans.

MSU’s recognitions for serving the veteran community include earning the 2018 Military Friendly Schools Gold Medal award and receiving the “Military Spouse Friendly” school designation from Victory Media. MSU was designated a “Purple Heart University” in 2015 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart for outstanding service to military veterans, service members, dependents and survivors.
