Big Head Todd and the Monsters bring blues

The Colorado-based rock band Big Head Todd and the Monsters with Mud Moganfield, Billy Branch and Ronnie Baker Brooks will bring its Big Head Blues Club tour to the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on Saturday [Oct. 15] at 7:30 p.m. The concert will showcase songs by blues great Willie Dixon.

Patrons who arrive early get a treat: a pre-show party starting at 6 p.m. and featuring free refreshments.

“Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been fans of blues music since their first days together playing music in high school,” the band says on its website.

Morganfield, a singer, is the son of blues great Muddy Waters. Harmonica player and singer Branch played harmonica with Dixon in the Chicago Blues All-Stars. Guitarist and singer Baker Brooks is the son of another blues guitarist and singer, Lonnie Brooks.

Dixon, a native of Vicksburg, was a towering figure in the Chicago blues scene from the 1940s until his death in 1992. He wrote many blues hits, including “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and “Little Red Rooster,” that achieved wider fame when recorded by such rock musicians as Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones.

Tickets are $50 and $44 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
