Former Lady Bulldog Phillips named assistant coach

Former Mississippi State women's golf player and graduate assistant Leigh Phillips has accepted the assistant coach seat for the Lady Bulldogs.

"I am very excited and thankful to have the opportunity to be the first assistant coach for the women's golf team," Phillips said. "It was a dream come true to play collegiate golf for Mississippi State, and becoming the assistant coach is an even greater privilege. Coach Ginger Brown-Lemm is a great coach, and I am excited to be working with her and helping to build a strong, nationally prominent program."

Phillips appeared in 23 tournaments over five years in the Maroon and White and lettered from 2007-10. She showed a vigorous work ethic during her career and improved her stroke average and tournament scores each season. During her senior campaign, Phillips earned a spot in each of the nine tournaments the Lady Bulldogs participated.

While earning Magna Cum Laude honors at MSU, Phillips was named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in Public Relations in the spring of 2010. Phillips is currently working toward her master's in sports administration.

In 2010, Phillips was named to the SEC Community Service Team for her involvement in the Starkville area and received the team's Newsome Award.

Phillips served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for three years and was a member of the M-Club for four years, serving as secretary her senior year.

During her time as a graduate assistant, the Lady Bulldogs posted the program's second-lowest tournament score at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational. She also helped guide then-senior Erika Thornton to a tie for first at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate.

"I am so pleased to be able to promote Leigh from a graduate assistant to a full-time assistant coach," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "She bleeds maroon. She has been coming to sporting events here with her father since she was in elementary school, competed as a Lady Bulldog, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her experience is exactly what this program needs to continue our progression with quality performances. She can market our program from a vantage point few others can. We look for great things over the next few years."

A native of Meridian, Phillips graduated from Lamar School in 2005.
