Orlowski welcomed as new soybean agronomist

John Orlowski

John Orlowski joined the Mississippi State University Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station July 1 as soybean agronomist.

Orlowski, a native of Perth in rural, upstate New York, will concentrate on soybean production in the Delta. He is stationed at the MSU Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville.

“We are excited about Dr. Orlowski joining the DREC team,” said Jeff Johnson, head of the Delta center. “His background and experience will add to our capabilities as we continue to grow the Extension and research programs in soybeans at the center.”

Orlowski grew up on a beef cattle and hay farm. He attended Cornell University, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences and a master’s degree in agronomy. In his master’s program, he evaluated different row spacing and seeding rate decisions for soybean producers in New York. He earned a doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky in crop science with a focus on input-intensive, high-yield soybean management.

“The researchers and Extension personnel at MSU and DREC are top-notch, and I am excited to have the opportunity to work with them,” Orlowski said. “This is a team-oriented environment, and producer support for Extension and the applied research of MAFES is outstanding.”

Orlowski said he plans to help producers not only increase soybean yields, but also evaluate their soybean production systems to maximize farm profitability.

“I am a believer in the value of conducting field-scale research with cooperating growers,” he said. “I would like to set up field-scale studies to evaluate practices such as row spacing, seeding rates and rotations with producers across the Delta. I would also like to work with growers and industry to establish a soybean yield contest for Mississippi. This state has some exceptional growers, and a yield contest would do a lot to showcase Mississippi soybean production to the rest of the country.”
