Peter Ryan

In recognition of his contributions to student well-being, Mississippi State's associate provost for academic affairs is receiving the Dean of Students Award of Excellence.

Peter L. Ryan, who has been at MSU for more than 15 years, becomes only the seventh recipient of the honor since its inception, according to Thomas Bourgeois.

"This award is only presented to someone who has made a transformative difference in the lives of students," MSU's dean of students said. "We don't take this honor lightly, and we don't present it to those who simply 'do their jobs.'"

Bourgeois praised Ryan for being a "tireless advocate for students who goes above the course and scope of his everyday responsibilities and sacrifices much of his personal time in the service of MSU and its community."

In his role as associate provost, Ryan's responsibilities include academic affairs and student services. A member of the university's behavioral intervention team and associate dean's council chair, he also is a professor of reproductive physiology in the animal and dairy sciences department.

Ryan is a University of Dublin graduate who holds master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Guelph in Canada's Ontario Province. He also completed post-doctoral work at Princeton University and Rutgers University.

"In his dealings with students, Dr. Ryan has shown time and again that he is dedicated to student success," Bourgeois added. "He truly cares, and it shows in the ways he interacts with our students. We're fortunate to have him in a leadership role."
