Exhibit features Maroon Edition-inspired works
"As Good As Glory" by Tennessee artist Janet Decker Yanez is among artworks on display in August and September at Mississippi State's Colvard Student Union Art Gallery.
Works of six artists inspired by Mississippi State's 2014 Maroon Edition book selection will be on display through Sept. 19.
Titled "Identity," the free, public exhibition in the Colvard Student Union Art Gallery is organized by MSU's Center for Student Activities, Maroon Edition freshman common reading program, and College of Architecture, Art and Design's art department.
"The Invisible Girls: A Memoir" by Sarah Thebarge is this year's Maroon Edition selection.
As part of the exhibition, a free, public reception will take place 4-6 p.m. Sept. 4, also in the second-floor gallery. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Through their creations, the artists from Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Tennessee express notions of identity, individual personal journeys, making connections and creating a sense of places -- all themes explored by the author in her 2013 book published by Jericho Books.
Now in its sixth year, Maroon Edition is the annual university-wide program that encourages incoming freshmen to read the same book prior to arriving for the fall semester. Participants then engage in dialogue with other students, administration, faculty and staff members throughout the school year. To learn more, visit www.maroonedition.msstate.edu.
"Identity" exhibitors and their respective areas of emphasis include:
-- Virginia Rougon Chavis, a University of Mississippi faculty member, graphic design;
-- Sheri Flake Reith from Mississippi, printmaking;
-- Rebekah Flake from Pennsylvania, photography; and
-- Tennessee artists Haley Morris-Cafiero, photography; Laurel Sucsy, painting; and Janet Decker Yanez, mixed media.
As part of this year's Maroon Edition program, author Thebarge will visit campus Aug. 19 to deliver the keynote address for MSU's inaugural Freshman Convocation at Humphrey Coliseum.
