Green named Extension family finances specialist

Rita Green

An experienced consumer economics professor has been named the new family financial management specialist for the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

Rita Green, who most recently has served as an assistant professor of human development and family studies with an emphasis in consumer economics in the MSU School of Human Sciences, was appointed on July 1.

Green, who has also been an Extension area agent in family resource management in the Northwest Extension District, brings diverse insights and experiences to the specialist role.

“Dr. Rita Green is able to work with Mississippi families and teach them strategies designed to help them save money and budget wisely,” said Michael Newman, director of the MSU School of Human Sciences. “Her position as a policy adviser on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Research Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Board gives her the opportunity to guide national research priorities and policies for food and agricultural research, education, Extension and economics.”

An Extension employee since 2008, Green is a NeighborWorks certified housing counselor and serves on the Federal Reserve’s Community Development Advisory Council for the Eighth District.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Memphis. She received her doctorate in adult education from the University of Memphis in 2012.

Green fills a vacancy left by the recent retirement of Bobbie Shaffett, who served as the family financial management specialist since 2004.
