SPA taking DAWG program applications

Sponsored Programs Administration at Mississippi State University is now taking applications for the 2014-15 Departmental Administrators Working Group (DAWG) program.

The primary goal of DAWG is the development and application of knowledge and skills in the area of sponsored project administration. The program is primarily targeted for those who have less than three years of experience as a departmental administrator. Participants will gain an understanding of sponsored projects with a greater appreciation for their complexity.

The following are the objectives of the program:
-- Acquire an understanding of the basic concepts of sponsored project administration.

-- Demonstrate how an understanding of sponsored project administration will enhance the participant’s ability to help solve and manage his or her daily work environment.

-- Apply the skills in the workplace that the participant will need as a professional.

-- Increase confidence as a departmental administrator.

DAWG participants are chosen through a competitive nomination and selection process, with a target number of 10-12 participants for FY15. The DAWG Application Package is designed to assess qualifications, professional accomplishments, academic skills, and leadership abilities of applicants. The information provided will be used as the basis for invitation to participate in DAWG. To receive the greatest benefit from the program, attendance at all DAWG sessions is required.

Beginning in August, DAWG participants will meet monthly from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to learn from campus experts and to discuss the roles and priorities of SPA and MSU departments. Lunch will also be provided.

Participants of DAWG will focus on different intense training topics in the area of Research Administration. These topics will center on the life cycle of an award, from proposal development/submission through the closeout of an award, to include: budget building, sponsor guidelines and application packages, compliance, university processes, and requested participant topics.

Completed and signed applications should be sent to Natalie Carpenter at ncarpenter@spa.msstate.edu or campus mail stop No. 9564 by Aug. 1 at 5 p.m.
