Mago to lead mechanical engineering department

Pedro Mago

After more than a decade at Mississippi State, an endowed professor will take the helm of the Bagley College of Engineering’s largest department.

Pedro Mago, the Tennessee Valley Authority professor of mechanical engineering, begins his term as head of the department July 1.

“Dr. Mago has been highly successful during his career in teaching, research and service,” interim dean Jason Keith said. “We are excited about Dr. Mago’s energy and passion for his department, and especially his vision for the future of the department.”

Since joining the Mississippi State faculty as an assistant professor in 2003, Mago has received several awards recognizing his commitment to research, service and teaching. Most recently, he was named to the Bagley College’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers and earned the Outstanding Faculty Research Award.

“It is a great honor for me to have the opportunity to lead the mechanical engineering department at MSU,” Mago said. “I am excited for the future and delighted to have this chance to contribute to the growth of the department.”

Earlier this year, Mago was named a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education. He is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Energy Research and the Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments Journal. He has served as a principal investigator on multiple research projects and is the author of nearly 130 journal papers, conference papers and book chapters in the energy systems area.

Mago earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Universidad de Oriente in Venezuela. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida.
