Brown named PR 'Educator of the Year'

Karyn Brown

A Mississippi State communication instructor is being recognized as the 2014 Public Relations Educator of the Year by the Public Relations Association of Mississippi.

Karyn Brown received the award at the organization's recent annual conference.

Brown serves as coordinator for the public relations concentration in the university's communication department and faculty adviser for the Public Relations Student Society of America campus chapter. Additionally, as editor of Vision, the College of Arts and Sciences magazine, she supervises student writers that produce all of the publication's content.

"It is truly an honor being recognized by top public relations professionals in the state," Brown said.

An MSU staff member since 1993, the Chicago native holds a master's degree in broadcasting and public communication from Western Illinois University and a bachelor's in speech communication and political science from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She also is a graduate of Duke University's continuing education certification program in nonprofit management.

"This is a great honor for Karyn, our department and the university," said department head John Forde. "She is a dedicated and committed educator and well-deserving of this recognition."

Brown also worked as the executive director for Mothers Against Drunk Driving-North Carolina. She was the organization's spokesperson and coordinator for statewide media relations and strategic communication.

The Public Relations Association of Mississippi, known to most by the acronym PRAM, has a membership of some 600 professionals representing advertising and public relations agencies, as well as corporations, non-profits, government, education, industries and other organizations that serve the public.
