Green named to volleyball staff

Peter Green

Peter Green has been tabbed as an assistant coach on the Mississippi State volleyball staff, head coach Jenny Hazelwood announced last week.

Green, who was most recently a volunteer assistant at Virginia, brings a wealth of volleyball experience to Starkville, having been a coach in the high school and collegiate ranks since 2000.

“I am excited to join Mississippi State and Jenny Hazelwood's staff,” Green said. “The Bulldogs are an up and coming program and I look forward to helping them make a big impact in the SEC.”

At Virginia, Green assisted in the turnaround of the Cavaliers program, as he helped the UVA program in going from last in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 9-22 record to finishing 17-13 and tied for fifth in the league last season. Green was also responsible for middle blocker training, while also handling scouting and video analysis.

Before taking the volunteer assistant position at Virginia, Green spent one season as an assistant coach at VCU, where he also was responsible for middle blocker training, scouting and video analysis, while also working with recruiting. Green’s leadership helped the Rams finish 25-6 and third in the A-10 Conference. He was also the position coach for Martina Samadan, who finished fifth nationally in blocks and was named the 2012 Regional Rookie of the Year.

Green spent four years spent as the head coach at Chowan University, where he led the Hawks to back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) conference titles in 2009 and 2010, the first in Chowan history, while finishing runner-up in the conference in 2011.

Green was named the 2011 CIAA Coach of the Year and oversaw the 2010 and 2011 CIAA Player of the Year and the 2009 and 2011 CIAA Rookie of the Year. Overall, Green finished with a 99-42 record, all without a coaching staff to assist him.

Prior to taking the head job at Chowan, Green was a part-time assistant at Randolph-Macon College. He led several club squads and got his start as the head boys varsity and girls junior varsity volleyball coach at Fredericksburg Christian High School.

“We are very fortunate to have someone with Peter's experience and character joining the Mississippi State volleyball program,” Hazelwood said. “He has a great knowledge of the game and a good eye to help train our players. Peter is the perfect fit to round out our volleyball staff.”

Green graduated from Cedarville University in 2000 with a double major in small business management and management information systems, while also double minoring in history and religious studies.
