Faculty art exhibit opens on University Drive

Creations by 19 faculty members in Mississippi State's College of Architecture, Art and Design are being featured at the university's Visual Arts Center Gallery.

Located at 808 University Drive, the gallery will sponsor a Thursday [Feb. 20] reception to honor the artists. Admission to the 5-7 p.m. event, like the gallery itself, is free and open to all.

Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, and 2-4 p.m. Saturdays.

Taking place through March 29, the new showing features diverse styles and several mediums, including painting, sculpture, photography, furniture design, graphic design, fiber art, and printmaking. Selections range from representational images depicting figures and portraits to explorations of abstract forms, colors, text, and shapes.

Featured artists include Chad Anderson, Peter Bain, Alex Bostic, Adrienne Callander, Neil Callendar, Brent Funderburk, Marita Gootee, Rowan Haug, Jeffery Haupt, Jude Landry, Dominic Lippillo, Robert Long, Gregory Martin, Tim McCourt, Soon Ee Ngoh, Jamie Mixon, Linda Sekinger, Jake Weigel and Jim West.

Some pieces in the show have received awards or been part of juried exhibitions. They include:

-- Mixon's poster for singer Pink, created for Verizon Arena concert in Little Rock, Ark., won an award of excellence from Communication Arts, a professional creative journal;

-- Landry's design of the United States for a T-shirt print also received a Communication Arts recognition and is represented in the show as a wood cut; and

-- Gootee's "DollarTree Rex," a cyanotype photogram of a toy purchased from a popular discount store, recently exhibited at the Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria, Ore.
