Bill Martin, a communications veteran within Southeastern Conference football, has been named Mississippi State's assistant athletic director for media relations.

Martin comes to Mississippi State from LSU, where he most recently served as an associate sports information director. He began his career with the Tiger athletic department in August 2001 as a student intern within the sports information office.

“We could not be more excited to have Bill join our staff,” senior associate athletic director Scott Wetherbee said. “His passion for collegiate athletics will be appreciated and respected by our entire department. His experience working with national media members will continue to further our efforts telling the story of Mississippi State.”

At MSU, Martin will oversee the athletic department's media relations staff and serve as the primary football contact as well as department spokesman. He will play an integral role in Mississippi State’s content production for the SEC Network when it launches in August 2014.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of the Bulldog family and very grateful for this opportunity,” Martin said. “After many trips to Starkville over the years, I know that Mississippi State is a special place with great, hard-working people. The leadership is strong and the staff has a passion for making the fan and student-athlete experience unforgettable. I am proud to join the team and look forward to being a part of the community.”

Martin was a student intern at LSU from August 2001 through January 2008, a full-time intern at the University of Florida from January 2008 to May 2008 before returning to LSU in a full-time capacity in June 2008.

Since his return to the Tigers’ sports information department in 2008, Martin has worked on a daily basis with the football and women’s basketball programs. His effort with Tiger football resulted in three national individual award winners, including back-to-back Bednarik Award winners for the nation’s top defensive player in Patrick Peterson (2010) and Tyrann Mathieu (2011) and a Heisman Trophy finalist in Mathieu (2011).

Martin also supervised the LSU student intern staff and assisted in baseball postseason publicity efforts, including three trips to the NCAA College World Series (2008, 2009, 2013).

While serving as a full-time intern at the University of Florida, Martin worked with the men’s basketball program and handled all publicity efforts for the Gators’ men’s and women’s golf programs.

Martin, who earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies with concentrations in communication studies, sports studies and business administration from LSU in December 2007, will begin his Mississippi State tenure in January.
