Stevenson named diversity, equity programs director

A Mississippi State alumnus long experienced in developing diversity programs on campus is the new director of the university's Office of Diversity and Equity Programs.

Tommy J. Stevenson officially assumed his new role April 1, after serving as interim director since June. He and others in the office work to ensure the land-grant institution adheres to all federal guidelines related to equal opportunity and regulatory compliance.

"We are excited to have Dr. Stevenson as a permanent member of the leadership team and look forward to his continuing leadership in increasing diversity on our campus," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jerry Gilbert.

Stevenson serves on President Mark E. Keenum's executive council. Assisting the president, Gilbert and other campus leaders in achieving the goals of a diverse faculty and staff also is among his primary responsibilities.

Previously, the Brooksville native was assistant dean for diversity and student development in MSU's James Worth Bagley College of Engineering. Among other positions on campus, he has served as an admissions counselor in the Division of Student Affairs.

Before going on to earn a doctoral degree from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University, Stevenson received his bachelor's and master's degrees from MSU.

"I really care about Mississippi State, and I am grateful for the opportunities that MSU has given me," he said. "I hope everyone who works at this great institution has similar experiences.

"I believe that Mississippi State is a great place where people can come and achieve their personal and professional aspirations," Stevenson added.
