Top-ticket state candidates' forum Wednesday

Mississippi State's Student Association and the university's Stennis-Montgomery Association will sponsor an April 6 campus forum for seven candidates in the state governor's race and two in the lieutenant governor's race.

Moderated by MSU journalist-in-residence Sid Salter, the 6-8 p.m. event will be held in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Lee Hall. Doors open at 5:15 p.m.

Student organizers invited all major party candidates to take part in the question-and-answer format.

Gubernatorial candidates attending include Bill Compton Jr., Dave Dennis, Johnny Dupree, Hudson Holliday, Bill Luckett, Guy Shaw, and Ron Williams. Billy Hewes and Tate Reeves are the participating lieutenant governor candidates.

The forum is open to all, but admission tickets are required. Seats not filled by 5:55 p.m. will be made available to non-ticketholders.

Tickets may be picked up in advance at offices of the Center for Student Involvement, located in 314 Colvard Student Union. A limited number are available in downtown Starkville at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership office.

For those unable to attend, the forum will be broadcast live by the University Television Center via website www.msstate.edu.

SA President Rhett Hobart said the forum is designed to provide an opportunity for members of the MSU and Starkville communities and others to hear remarks on current issues by those seeking the state's two highest elective offices.

"This event will allow for all candidates to gather for the first time and have a chance to speak to constituents from the entire state of Mississippi," Hobart said.
