Updated 'Mikado' to be staged this week

A modernized take on a classic Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera will be featured Thursday through Saturday at Mississippi State.

Curtain time for "The Mikado" is 7:30 p.m. each day in the university's McComas Hall main theater.

General admission is $15; $10 for MSU students with valid identification cards.

"Our twist to this love story has the production in the Harajuku youth culture of modern Japan," explained faculty director Jo Durst of the sponsoring communication department. "We've also added the local rock band 'Mooring Line.'"

"It still is the beloved music and tale of comic monarchs, bloated oligarchs and three little maids searching for a handsome lover," she added.

The original "Mikado" debuted in the mid 1800s in London, where it initially ran for nearly 700 performances. The collaborative effort of Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert remains one of the most frequently staged works of its kind.
