CALS recognizes outstanding teachers

Four faculty members were honored as outstanding teachers in Mississippi State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences during recent award ceremonies.

Cory Gallo

Cory Gallo, assistant professor in landscape architecture, received the New Faculty Teaching Award and the Overall Teaching Award. Gallo led the efforts to provide landscape design and ecosystem services for the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum. The five-phase project involved six landscape architecture classes, two graphic design classes and an architecture studio. In the past four years, the projects have received three major design awards, raised more than $50,000 in private donations and been described in dozens of publications.

Carolyn Huntington

Animal and dairy sciences instructor Carolyn Huntington received the Lower Division Teaching Award. The award recognizes teaching excellence at the freshman and sophomore levels. In addition to her teaching duties, Huntington is the director for undergraduate advising in the college. She received the Outstanding Advising Award from the National Academic Advising Association in the faculty academic advising category in 2011.

Kalyn Coatney

Agricultural economics assistant professor Kalyn Coatney received the Upper Division Teaching Award. Coatney teaches courses in food markets and price analysis, game theory and agribusiness management, and other topics.

Ron Williams

Ron Williams received the Graduate Level Teaching Award. Williams is an assistant professor in food science, nutrition and health promotion and a certified health education specialist. He teaches numerous graduate level courses including health promotion techniques and design and administration of health promotion programs, among others. The master’s degree in health education/health promotion is offered through distance learning at the university’s Center for Distance Education.
