LEDGER: State pension fund cut opposed

The Clarion-Ledger reported over the weekend that after years of market losses, a majority of the state's pension board said they will not support skipping a taxpayer-funded increase next year to bolster the retirement system.

Gov. Haley Barbour suggested that course, and the state Senate recently passed a bill to do just that.

As a national debate ensues on the sustainability of public pension systems across the country, Barbour has called for rolling back benefits for Mississippi's public employees, who are among the worst paid in the country.
