Hoblet president-elect for national association
Dr. Kent Hoblet, dean of the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been selected president-elect for the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
Hoblet will serve in this role until he becomes president of the association in July 2013. The AAVMC coordinates the affairs of all 28 U.S. veterinary medical colleges, all five Canadian colleges of veterinary medicine, nine U.S. departments of veterinary science, eight U.S. departments of comparative medicine, eight international veterinary schools, three veterinary medical education organizations, and four affiliate international veterinary schools. The association represents more than 4,000 faculty, 5,000 staff, 10,000 veterinary students, and 3,000 graduate students at these institutions.
"Having Dr. Hoblet in this role represents a significant commitment on his part to growing opportunities for veterinary students here and around the country," said Dr. Greg Bohach, vice president of MSU's Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. "This is another example of how the college and division are working within and beyond our region to focus on issues facing our students now and as they enter their careers."
Hoblet, who has been MSU-CVM's dean since 2006, sees his position with AAVMC as an opportunity to coordinate nationally on many new initiatives in veterinary medicine.
"This is an exciting time to be in the field of veterinary medicine, and I am pleased to be working with AAVMC's board," Hoblet said. "We'll be building research and global medicine opportunities to further energize today's students and the profession as a whole."
Hoblet earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree and master's degree at Ohio State University. He was in private practice for 12 years in Ashland, Ohio, before joining the OSU faculty in 1983. Since 1991, he has served as chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and as the university's Extension veterinarian for dairy cattle.
