Community band begins 2013 spring semester

The Mississippi State band staff again is inviting university employees and area residents with previous band experience to play in the 2013 Starkville/MSU Community Band.

Practice sessions will take place 6:30-8:30 p.m. each Monday during the spring semester at the Band and Choral Rehearsal Hall, located off Blackjack Road near the southern edge of campus. A $20 registration fee will be accepted at the first rehearsal Monday, Jan. 14.

The band's repertoire includes a mix of traditional marches, patriotic selections and "pops" arrangements.

Interested high school students also are invited to join. They must be at least 15 years of age, have two years of prior playing experience and furnish their own instruments.

Some instruments, such as tubas, French horns and percussion, may be available on a limited basis through the band office.

Formed in 2003 and directed by Craig Aarhus, the performing group was created to give interested persons with prior experience an opportunity to continue making music. Aarhus is associate director of campus bands.

In addition to MSU students and employees, membership has included residents of the Golden Triangle and area cities as far away as Philadelphia and Tupelo.
