John Dickerson

A former student recruiting leader at Mississippi State is coming back to his alma mater as the university's new registrar.

John R. Dickerson, currently vice president of Copiah-Lincoln Community College's Simpson County Center, will begin his new MSU duties Jan. 16.

A 1986 graduate of Jackson's Jim Hill High School, Dickerson holds master's and doctoral degrees from MSU in counselor education and community college leadership, respectively. He also is a graduate of Mississippi College and Hinds Community College.

At the Mendendall-based center since 2007, Dickerson has been responsible for overseeing all aspects of the branch-campus operations. He became a Co-Lin vice president after having worked for a decade at MSU.

Dickerson came to the Starkville campus in 1997 as associate director for enrollment services. Prior to that, he had been Mississippi College's associate dean of students.

At MSU, he earned successive promotions--including the directorship of enrollment services--until achieving the office of senior associate director for admissions and scholarships, the post he held before joining the administration at the South Mississippi community college.

"He has deep roots at MSU, in that he is an active alumnus and former employee in the Division of Student Affairs," said Jerry Gilbert, provost and executive vice president. In making the announcement, Gilbert specifically cited Dickerson's extensive experience in the admissions, student orientation, scholarships and student recruitment areas.

With offices in Garner Hall's East Wing, the Office of the Registrar is responsible, among other things, for the processing of data related to MSU course offerings, registration, academic records, records certification and degree clearances. For more information, visit www.registrar.msstate.edu.

Dickerson succeeds Butch Stokes, who retired earlier this year after working in the registrar's office since 1995 and leading it since 2002.
