Harper on tap for Thursday's Collins Speaker Series

Third District Congressman Gregg Harper visits Mississippi State Thursday, Nov. 1 as the latest guest for the university's Morris W.H. "Bill" Collins Speaker Series.

Open to all, the program featuring the second-term Republican and Jackson native will begin at 2 p.m. in Mitchell Memorial Library's John Grisham Room.

A memorial to the founding director of MSU's John C. Stennis Institute of Government, the lecture series was established to regularly bring leading public figures to campus for close, personal discussions about their lives and careers.

Harper, who was first elected in 2008, has lived in the 3rd District since 1972 and currently resides in Pearl with wife Sidney and children Livingston and Maggie.

Before entering Congress, he practiced law for 27 years, including service as prosecuting attorney for the cities of Brandon and Richland. He remains active in the communities as a member of both the Pearl and Rankin County chambers of commerce.

In the House, Harper chairs the Committee on Ethics and Subcommittee on Elections. He also is a member of the committees on Energy and Commerce, and House Administration, as well as subcommittees on Environment and the Economy and Commerce, and Manufacturing and Trade.

Harper's peers also elected him as their class's representative on the Republican Steering Committee.

In addition to the Stennis Institute, MSU Libraries and Mitchell Memorial's Congressional and Political Research Center, the speaker series is co-sponsored by the Starkville-based Stennis Center for Public Service Leadership and student Stennis Montgomery Association.
