Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby take the stage at the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian in October.

One started as a mandolin-playing prodigy and now reigns as a country music icon. The other is a lauded singer-songwriter whose uniquely upbeat, far-ranging piano skills are instantly recognizable. They have a stack of Grammy awards between them and have proven that bluegrass and piano can play well together.

Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby with Kentucky Thunder will play at the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.

Skaggs and Hornsby first collaborated on the 2007 album titled “Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby,” and released a second joint album, “Cluck Ol’ Hen,” in August 2013. The new album is a collection of live performances from their previous tour, and includes a striking interpretation of Hornsby’s first and most well-known hit, “The Way It Is.”

The 14 Grammy awards he has earned are just a small part of his extensive resume as Skaggs has spent more than 50 years of his 59 proving that bluegrass, country, and gospel are all within easy reach of his mandolin picking.

Hornsby is most often associated with his group, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, but he played for the Grateful Dead as well and the range of his collaborative work is mind-boggling, including such names as Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, and Crosby Stills and Nash.

Tickets are $65 and $59 at the MSU Riley Center box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
