Author, historian, former Delta teacher to headline Monday event
Social Entrepreneurship: Think Big, Be Bold, Drive Change" will be the topic of a Monday, April 8 program at Mississippi State.
Open to all, the address by award-winning historian and social entrepreneur Chris Myers Asch begins at 6 p.m. in the Colvard Student Union's Bill Foster Ballroom.
He is the author of "The Senator and the Sharecropper: The Freedom Struggles of James O. Eastland and Fannie Lou Hamer."
Now in its second printing from the University of North Carolina Press, the 392-page book has been honored with the Liberty Legacy Foundation Prize of the Organization of American Historians, McLemore Prize of the Mississippi Historical Society and Mississippi Library Association's Non-Fiction Award.
Asch is a University of North Carolina doctoral graduate who formerly was part of the Teach for America corps in Sunflower County. In addition to teaching elementary and middle school for three years in the Mississippi Delta, the Washington, D.C., native served a year in South Korea through the J. William Fulbright international education exchange program.
In 1998, he co-founded the Sunflower County Freedom Project, serving as executive director until 2006, when he launched the U.S. Public Service Academy. He also has been honored with the AmeriCorps Alums' Eli Segal Award and was named a Fellow of Echoing Green, a program of the General Atlantic global growth equity firm.
Asch's campus visit is co-sponsored by MSU's history department and Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, along with Volunteer Starkville.
