Humanities lecture to examine environmentalists Tuesday

The 2011 Distinguished Lecture Series of Mississippi State's Institute for the Humanities continues Tuesday [April 19] when Emory University professor Paul Allitt speaks at the university.

"The Environmentalists and their Critics: 1960-2010" will be the topic of his 4 p.m. public presentation in the McCool Hall atrium, to be followed by a reception and book signing. All events are free.

Based on his 2009 book, "The Conservatives: Ideas and Personalities Throughout American History (Yale University Press)," Allitt's discussion will examine competing sides of environmental issues over the last half century.

Emory's Cahoon Family Professor of American History, Allitt is a specialist in religious, intellectual and environmental histories.

A 1977 graduate of Oxford University, England, he holds a doctorate in American history from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Divinity School prior to joining the Emory faculty in 1988.

In addition to authoring six books, Allitt is the presenter of a six-lecture series with The Teaching Co. (www.teach12.com) on aspects of American and British history.

MSU's Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, and offices of Research and Economic Development and the Provost. It regularly hosts scholars, writers and artists from around the world.
