Nominations open for honorary doctoral degrees

Mississippi State University alumni who know a nationally recognized, hardworking individual who deserves special and elite recognition can submit that person’s name and qualifications for an MSU honorary doctoral degree.

MSU graduates -- as well as current faculty, staff and students -- should suggest only individuals with sustained achievement in scholarship, public service, professional activity, or creative and performing arts: influential leaders deserving of exclusive and elite honors.

Honorary doctoral degree recipients generally have ties to MSU and Mississippi. No specific format is required; nomination packets vary based on the individuals being nominated. Along with the nomination, any other information should be provided by the Jan. 11, 2013, deadline.

Nominators should send a letter about the distinguished candidate and supporting materials to MSU’s Honorary Degree Committee, in care of the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, via P.O. Box BQ, Mississippi State, MS 39762.

Ineligible nominees include MSU faculty, staff and administrators, as well as elected or appointed public officials, until one year after leaving their position. Candidates for public office are also ineligible.

One or two honorary degrees will be awarded at the spring 2013 commencement, and possible awards include doctor of law, doctor of science, doctor of humane letters, doctor of public service, or doctor of creative and performing arts.

For more information, contact MSU’s Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President at 662-325-3742 or provost@msstate.edu.
