Old Crow Medicine Show takes stage at MSU Riley Center Friday night

American roots-music band Old Crow Medicine Show is performing at the MSU Riley Center [Friday] May 4 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the 2018 Jimmie Rodgers Festival.

Rolling Stone magazine once said the band combines “old-time string music and punk swagger,” which can be heard on the band’s biggest hit, “Wagon Wheel,” a reworked version of a song fragment by Bob Dylan.

Old Crow Medicine Show is a member of Nashville’s tradition-loving Grand Ole Opry, but retains the feistiness of its early days performing on street corners. The band has won two Grammy Awards, appeared frequently on the public radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” and has toured with a wide variety of artists, including Willie Nelson, Brandi Carlile, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, John Prine and The Avett Brothers.

Its brand new album, “Volunteer,” to be released on April 20, features 10 new songs written by band members, plus a new arrangement of the traditional fiddle tune “Elzick’s Farewell.” The album’s producer, Dave Cobb, is known for his previous work with Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.

Tickets are $43 and $37 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at (601) 696-2200.
