‘Sense & Sensibility’ comes to MSU Riley Center on Friday

Aquila Theatre brings its wildly imaginative touch to a theatrical adaptation of a classic romantic comedy, Jane Austen’s “Sense & Sensibility,” at an MSU Riley Center performance on Friday [Feb. 9] at 7:30 p.m.

Aquila, founded in London and now based in New York, has delighted MSU Riley Center audiences in previous seasons with such inventive productions as “Murder on the Nile,” “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (with a female Sherlock) and “Cyrano: The Musical.”

In “Sense & Sensibility,” a British-American cast takes a fresh approach to the beloved 1811 novel. The play chronicles the up-and-down love lives of the Dashwood sisters, levelheaded Elinor and passionate Marianne, after their father’s death drastically reduces their income and social standing.

Aquila’s artistic director, Desiree Sanchez, directs the play with her usual innovative use of space, movement, design and sound. As Dramatics magazine put it, Aquila “takes the classics off their pedestals and presents them as live-action, flesh-and-blood adventures.”

Tickets are $39 and $33 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at (601) 696-2200.
