‘The Lightning Thief’ to bring family-oriented action to MSU Riley Center Friday

A teenage hero undertakes a brave quest and battles legendary monsters in “The Lightning Thief,” a high-energy musical updating of Greek myths that will be the MSU Riley Center’s next family show. The curtain will rise at the historic venue in downtown Meridian on Friday [Feb. 3] at 7 p.m.

Percy Jackson learns that he’s more than just an ordinary kid struggling with school. He seems to have accidentally angered some of the Greek gods he’s encountered in his textbooks. Zeus, mightiest of them all, gives Percy 10 days to find a stolen lightning bolt to prevent an all-out war.

This fast-paced show, recommended for grades two through six, compresses lots of action and plenty of singing and dancing into just an hour. Amid all the extravagant adventure, it deals with real-life concerns that kids can relate to, even if they don’t have to solve the riddle of the Oracle in order to deal with betrayal by a friend.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at (601) 696.2200.
