University moving forward with FLSA implementation plan

On May 18, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) released its final overtime rule, doubling the salary threshold for white-collar exemptions to the federal overtime pay requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The rule’s impact will be widespread, and higher education institutions, including Mississippi State University, and other employers are required to make the necessary changes to comply in advance of the federal rule’s Dec. 1 effective date.

After the announcement of the final rule by the Labor Department, Mississippi State officials intensified their review of the proposed changes and the impact to employees. With a structured approach to gathering data, MSU’s Office of Human Resources Management (HRM) staff conducted extensive meetings with vice presidents, deans, directors, department heads, and other administrators. An impact report has been provided to and evaluated by MSU administration.

The university will move forward with an implementation plan to comply with the federal regulations, effective Nov. 1.

A page has been added to HRM’s website to share these changes with all employees. The new page includes key changes, general guidelines, and frequently asked questions. All employees are encouraged to visit the website at www.hrm.msstate.edu/compensation/flsa to review this information.

Employees whose FLSA status is impacted will receive a separate communication before the effective date.
